National Science Week!

Last week saw Kingshott celebrate National Science Week with the theme ‘Time’.

The week started with Mrs Keel and members of the Eco-committee leading an assembly where the school reflected on its plastic use and explained as little as 12% is currently recycled in the UK.  The committee encouraged everyone to take part in ‘The Big Plastic Count’ run by Greenpeace, the data will help petition parliament on better recycling policies in the future.  Later in the week Mrs Keel and all members of the Eco-committee did a litter pick around the school, it was great that we didn’t fill a big bag, showing our school community vales and respects our open spaces.

Other activities included Year 7 making plastic from potatoes and looking at its potential uses; Year 6 utilising plastic recycling in their junk boat races; Year 5 using plastic bottles to filter water and discussing how freshwater can be polluted; Year 3 having an explosive time with experiments and Year 1 enjoying a workshop on weather.

Year 8 enjoyed a visiting speaker from Easyjet discussing careers in engineering and physics.  They loved hearing about what it takes to put a jet plane together.  Also, it was rather exciting to hear about a project, that has only recently announced to the public, in developing a more sustainable and eco-friendly hydrogen engine.  They learnt lots thanks to some insightful questions and some of the group even won EasyJet themed prizes thanks to their physics skills!

Year 4 turned back time to become Eco-Ancient Greeks. As part of “The Big Plastic Count” each child brought in a plastic bottle and lid to make their own timer. The bottle was cut in half and a small hole was made using a compass in the lid. The top of the bottle was turned upside down and filled with water containing green food colouring. A stop watch was used to measure increments of one minute which were marked off using a Sharpie pen on the bottom container. An accurate water timer was made and could be used to time brushing teeth, star jumps or practising an instrument! The children worked well in pairs helping one another to make their own timer.

The kitchen also joined in with the fun working with Mrs Keel to add scientific and nutritional information to the meals throughout the week and produced fabulous Science themed puddings, including Agar plates of jelly!
