Last week we celebrated our own World Day of Languages. Our families and staff speak languages as diverse as Polish, Urdu, Hindi, Gujarati, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, Arabic, Korean, Spanish and German, to name just a few.
Madame Mahan, our Head of Modern Foreign Languages, did an assembly for Years 6 to 9, where pupils took part in a Who wants to be a Millionaire-style quiz. The questions covered languages, quotes about languages, culture and geography.
Year 6 read La chenille qui a tres faim (The Very Hungry Caterpillar) by Eric Carle. They put their dramatic skills into action to reenact the very large caterpillar, the butterfly emerging from the cocoon and the beautiful butterfly at the end of the story.
Years 8 and 9 became Language Detectives. They had to spot patterns and decipher codes to understand the meaning of one sentence in eight different languages, such as Norwegian, Portuguese and Romanian. This was followed up with a discussion about the similarities and differences between the languages studied.
All week, Years 6 to 9 were answering the register in a language of their choice. They also enjoyed scurrying around the corridors, taking part in a House Languages Quiz.
