To celebrate National Poetry Day on Thursday 3rd October, Year 7 students participated in a Guinness World Record attempt! Given that the theme this year was ‘counting’, poet Laura Mucha endeavoured to host the largest ever multi-venue poetry lesson and our students ‘counted’ in this project!
In the run-up to the event, our Year 7 students generated a range of wonderful ideas for poet Laura Mucha to consider as she went to work on her first draft of a new poem about what ‘counts’. In one lesson, our students pondered the questions:
- What do you count on?
- What do you think counts?
Our students said that they count on their parents, their friends, their teachers and themselves. And when it came to what they think truly counts, or what they consider important, a wide-range of ideas were put forward: everyone’s voice, education, plenty of sleep, the environment, equality, inclusivity and oxygen.
On National Poetry Day, Year 7 gathered in the Senior Study Centre and joined poet Laura Mucha via Zoom. They helped Laura refine and reshape her poem, responding to questions and participating in polls to help her make decisions regarding vocabulary and punctuation.
We're pleased to say that Laura was successful in her World Record Attempt and that our Year 7 students played a part in this official title!
