"Pupils' Mathematical skills are excellent" ISI 2022

At the Senior School, we aim to foster a love of mathematics while equipping students with the essential analytical thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving skills they will need to thrive in the future. Building on the strong foundations laid in the Junior School, our mathematics curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, challenge students, and ignite a passion for learning. We ensure that students are prepared to meet the challenges of an ever-changing world, where mathematical skills are integral to success.

Years 7 to 9 (Key Stage 3)

In Key Stage 3, mathematics is taught with a focus on deep understanding and practical application. Students are introduced to more complex mathematical concepts such as pre-algebraic thinking, algebraic notation, and the development of problem-solving skills. From Year 6, students build upon the foundational knowledge gained in the Junior School, with an increasing focus on:

Our mathematics curriculum focuses on developing essential skills such as analytical thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving. Students are encouraged to investigate problems and find efficient solutions, honing their ability to think critically and logically. They are guided to articulate their solutions clearly, strengthening their reasoning and understanding of mathematical concepts. As they progress, students build the confidence needed to tackle more complex and challenging problems, preparing them for higher-level mathematical thinking and real-world applications.

By Year 8, students are well-prepared for the rigours of GCSE level mathematics, having developed their mathematical toolbox and refined their skills in both analysis and application.

Years 10 & 11: GCSE

As students progress through the Senior School, the curriculum is structured to ensure they are fully prepared for their GCSE Mathematics exams. By Year 10, students begin their preparation, gaining a strong understanding of core mathematical concepts and learning how to apply them to solve real-world problems. The curriculum is designed to challenge students and develop both their analytical techniques and ability to use a range of mathematical tools.

Maths beyond the curriculum

Mathematics at the Senior School is not confined to the classroom. We offer a variety of wider enrichment opportunities designed to further stimulate students’ interest and deepen their mathematical understanding. These include:

  • Maths clubs and competitions, where students can apply their skills in fun and challenging settings.
  • STEAM projects, which allow students to engage in interdisciplinary work and explore how mathematics integrates with other subjects such as science, technology, and the arts.
  • Workshops and guest speakers that expose students to real-world applications of mathematics and career paths that require mathematical expertise.

These opportunities help students see the value of mathematics beyond the classroom, encouraging a broader understanding of how mathematical thinking can be applied in various fields and everyday life.
