SUBJECT NAME: ENGLISH

Aims of the subject:

At Kingshott, English is taught with passion and enthusiasm. Children are encouraged through English to be curious; to investigate language, to play with words and further their knowledge of the world.

We aim to instil a love for reading throughout the school. Children are encouraged to read often, choosing books for both pleasure and development. During our daily reading sessions, children are reminded of the joy of reading.

Children at Kingshott are given the support and encouragement to use their literacy skills with increasing confidence, helping them to become the ‘Best Me I Can Be’.

Assessment methods:

Children’s English skills are continually assessed informally in a range of age-appropriate ways throughout the the year.  There are then formal tests at the end of each term to assess children’s progress in reading, grammar and punctuation. Writing skills are assessed against targets set for each year group.

Teaching techniques:

Pre-Prep follow the ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme for teaching phonics and pupils have access to a wide range of reading schemes.

English is embedded throughout the school curriculum and children are given opportunities to learn in different ways. There are chances to meet and listen to authors and poets, trips to theatres, a yearly poetry recital and much more!

Use of ICT within the subject: ICT is used in many ways in English, for example; typing up best copies of work, researching, or practising their skills through online programmes such as Education City or Purple Mash. Many of our children enjoy using the Spelling Shed app at home and in school to practise their spellings.
