Remembering, learning and sharing

Kingshott pupils have taken time to listen, learn and remember over the last few weeks surrounding Remembrance. Including:

  • Our Year 9 pupils visiting Ypres on their History trip. They stood on the battlefields, visited the cemeteries, and discovered first hand the stories of those who fought and fell. They were honoured to be able to lay a wreath for the Officers and men of the 1st Battalion Hertfordshire Regiment during their visit.
  • Mr Comerford visiting our Model United Nations to share his experiences as part of the UN peacekeeping force in Bosnia in 1992. He gave an engaging talk about the role and responsibilities of a UN peacekeeper, shedding light on the challenges he faced during his service. Mr. Comerford also brought with him his UN peacekeeping medal and beret, offering the students a personal and tangible connection to his work. It was a fascinating and invaluable insight into the realities of international peacekeeping and a unique perspective on the work of the United Nations.
  • Year 5 enjoying a talk around the theme of Remembrance, also given by Mr Comerford. Despite definitely not being old enough to have fought in either World War(!), he explained that at this time of year, he likes to look back at his time in the army, and remember his experiences and the friends he made. He brought many things to show the children, including his berets from the Intelligence Corps, and from his time with the UN. The children were able to see the intricate and ornate badges showing his ranks and regiments, as well as the medals he had earned. He shared details of the various tours he engaged in, and answered many of the children's questions.
  • Some of our youngest children making their own poppies ready for Remembrance Day in sewing club. They enjoyed learning how to sew a button to the centre of their poppy.
  • The school community joining together to pause and reflect on the profound significance of remembrance during our solemn Remembrance Service. The atmosphere was marked by the thoughtful silence of our students and staff, honouring those who gave their lives for the freedoms we cherish today.
